The Top Choice to Replace Missing Teeth
Dental implants are today’s gold standard of tooth replacement. It consists of a very small titanium “post” (the actual implant), which is attached to a lifelike dental crown. The crown is the only part of this tooth-replacement system that is visible in your mouth. The implant itself rests beneath your gum line in the jawbone that used to hold your missing tooth. Two, four or more implants can be used to support multiple crowns, or even an entire arch of upper or lower replacement teeth.
Why Patients Choose Implants
Leaving empty spaces in your mouth after losing one or more teeth can lead to health issues such as jawbone deterioration. Not to mention that a full smile makes people feel more confident. Dental implants are also the most natural tooth replacement option.
Reasons for tooth loss can vary, from unforeseen trauma to decay and necessary extraction, but dental implants comprehensively replace lost teeth. Our Norman dental practice places implants in conjunction with either a single crown, a fixed bridge or even complete dentures that allow you to regain full functionality of your bite, maintain the health of your existing teeth and jawbone, and achieve a rejuvenated appearance. We take a patient-centered approach to patient care, ensuring each patient is comfortable and well-informed about their treatment, and make sure you will feel as comfortable as possible during your procedure.

How Dental Implants Work
Implant-supported restorations are one of the best teeth replacement options available. They are the next best thing to a natural tooth from root to crown and are surgically placed into the jaw, preserving bone. After placement, the implant “post” and surrounding tissue fuse, creating a strong foundation for the restoration. As the implant doesn’t move within the bone, this stable option completely restores your ability to chew as compared to a traditional, removable appliance.
When you choose implant placement, surrounding teeth do not shift due to empty spaces in your smile. This maintains proper alignment and decreases the likelihood of future issues developing that would need further intervention.

Dental Implants by Andrew Wheatley, DDS in Norman
Your journey starts with an initial consultation and an exam before proceeding with treatment. This allows Dr. Wheatley to determine if dental implants are an ideal solution at the moment or if you require preoperative procedures to meet the oral health standards that support lasting results. Patients who are candidates for implants have sufficient jawbone in all dimensions and show no signs of active periodontal disease.
It is important to note that the entire process can take several months. In some cases, you’ll need pre-treatments to bring you into candidacy for dental implants. We then create a custom treatment plan for you, and during your consultation, you will also discuss the cost and pricing of your implant surgery based on your specific situation.
Prior to placing the implant, we may schedule appointments to remove decayed teeth and to repair other dental problems. In some cases, a bone graft may be necessary.
Once it is time for your implant to be placed, the procedure is not complex or painful. You will be sufficiently numbed up in the area and the doctor surgically implants a thin screw made of durable titanium. The titanium integrates with your jawbone over several months. When bonding is complete, your dentist attaches a replacement tooth to the implant.
You may experience pain and soreness for a few days following your dental implant’s placement, but we will work with you on pain management options. Dr. Wheatley may recommend pain relievers to see you through.
We will monitor your healing process and make sure your gum tissue and bone remain healthy and adjust to the implant as planned. Once the implant is healed, you will have to come back to us once again to place the permanent crown on the implant. Once that is healed, you simply brush and floss twice each day and come in for your regular cleanings and routine checkups. No other maintenance is required.
In some cases, Dr. Wheatley works closely with a local oral surgeon or collaborates with other specialists to make sure our patients get the best possible outcome. Dr. Wheatley creates personalized solutions for each patient, helping them achieve the smiles they desire.
