Cleanings & Preventative Care

No matter if you are 2 or 102, the key to good oral health is prevention. Preventive dentistry includes oral care, education and treatments designed to avoid gum disease, cavities and enamel wear. From daily brushing to annual dental cleanings and regular check-ups with a dentist – it’s all part of a routine to keep your mouth healthy. And a healthy mouth means less serious work needed down the road.

Deep Cleanings & Root Planing

A deep cleaning is a specific procedure to treat gum and periodontal disease. We may use an instrument called a probe to measure the area around your teeth to see if you have any pocketing (area between the tooth and gum where bacteria may form). If the pockets are larger than 3 millimeters, we may recommend deep scaling and root planing. Scaling involves removing plaque and calculus from the enamel of the teeth both above and below the gum line. The other part of deep cleaning is root planing to remove plaque and calculus from the surface of the roots of your teeth. A scaling and root planing procedure may take more than one visit.

Crowns & Bridges

Occasionally cavities proceed beyond a point where a simple filling will restore the look and function of the tooth. At other times, a tooth may be missing or needs to be removed due to the severity of decay. Crowns (sometimes called Caps) are the ideal restoration for these more involved cavities. Bridges are affordable options for replacing teeth.

Dentures

We can give you back your beautiful smile. Dentures, whether partial or complete, are an affordable, esthetic way to regain function, comfort and confidence. Partial dentures may be used to replace one or multiple teeth. Partial dentures are clasped onto existing teeth and offer dependable retention. If complete dentures are necessary, Dr. Wheatley uses extensive techniques to deliver not only the look, but the stability of natural teeth including implant retained dentures.

Endodontics (Root Canals)

Root canal treatment can do wonders in relieving dental pain and can save your teeth. Patients typically need a root canal when there is inflammation or infection in the roots of a tooth. During root canal treatment, Dr. Wheatley will remove the pulp inside the tooth, clean, disinfect and shape the root canals, and place a filling to seal the space.

Here are a few things everybody should know about root canals.

Fillings

Cavities happen to the best of us. To treat a cavity, we will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and then fill the area on the tooth where the decayed material once lived. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay. We offer a variety of filling materials including tooth colored composite. Even if you don’t have any new cavities, we will check existing fillings during your regular check-up to ensure they are still in great shape, and may recommend replacing a filling as needed.

Pediatric Dental Care

Our young patients are important to us. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child should go to the dentist by age 1 or within six months after the first tooth erupts – and then return regularly for prevention and treatment. From a simple cleaning to fillings or treatment of trauma to monitoring the formation of a proper bite and healthy mouth, we take care of our youngest patients. As a father of three children, Dr. Wheatley is passionate about making sure our pediatric patients have the best experience possible and develop life-long good oral health.

Relaxation Dentistry

Don’t put off needed dental care because of fear. Comfort is an important part of great patient care. From his relaxed and friendly approach to tackling the problem with an oral sedative (pill) and nitrous oxide (laughing gas), Dr. Wheatley will do all that he can to make you comfortable while you are in his chair. Should it become necessary, we work with a certified anesthesiologist who can provide IV sedation in our dental office so that you can be completely sedated. Schedule your consultation today and put an end to dental anxiety.

Surgical Tooth Extractions & Wisdom Teeth Removal

It is always the goal to save your natural teeth, but in some cases a tooth extraction may be necessary because a tooth is too badly damaged from trauma or decay. Many people fear a surgical extraction. However, anesthesia and sedation techniques will help make the procedure as comfortable as possible. Should an extraction be necessary, we offer many options to replace your natural teeth including implants, bridges or partial and complete dentures.

Can your tooth be saved?

We also perform wisdom tooth extractions. When the time comes to remove one or more of the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth, Dr. Wheatley is here to help. If a wisdom tooth doesn’t have room to grow; pain, infection or other dental problems may occur. An impacted wisdom tooth may grow at an angle toward the next tooth, at an angle toward the back of the mouth or grow straight up or down like other teeth but stay trapped within the jawbone. We will evaluate and recommend the appropriate procedure.
